The Pietà is a marble sculpture depicting the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. It is the only work Michelangelo signed, reportedly in response to someone’s claim that it looked like another artist’s work. In 1972 it suffered significant damage in an attack by a mentally-disturbed individual. It was restored and is now protected behind bulletproof acrylic.
