The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79 buried Pompeii under 4-6 meters of ash and pumice. It was initially rediscovered in 1599 and again in 1748. Objects that were buried were well preserved because of the lack of air and moisture. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
