Hasedera Temple in Kamakura is famous for its wooden 11-headed Kannon (no photos allowed of that). The temple’s age is unclear but it may date as far back as the 8th century according to some accounts. By some estimates, over 50,000 statues of Jizo Bosatsu, like the ones in this picture, have been placed at the temple. They are said to comfort the souls of those lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion.
